I believe that everyone is an athlete. I strongly believe in the power of the mind. I use mental imagery in my cycle classes to motivate and inspire the participants. I am happiest when I feel that I have helped someone accomplish a goal or when I am able to motivate someone to try their hardest in class. Being an instructor is not about telling someone to pedal their feet faster, or pick up heavier weights. It is about inspiring and motivating them to WANT to do it for themselves. I believe that everyone has the ability and power to change their lives and themselves. If I can help just one person feel accomplished, achieve something that they never thought possible, then I have done my job. She even combined her passion for education and fitness by teaching children’s aerobic classes. In addition, she became an American Red Cross certified instructor and teaches CPR courses.
Her aerobic certification by ACE led her to teach in Jamaica and Antigua for the Sandals Resorts. She also was a presenter for the annual Greg Twombly’s Philadelphia College of Knowledge. Island Aerobics has had Shelley on our summer schedule since she moved to South Jersey five years ago.

The Gyrotonic system uses a special tower with weights and pulleys to provide resistance that allows you to use circular motions to strengthen and lengthen the body. More resistance can be added to build strength, and less resistance for flexibility and mobility. Many Pilates studios are incorporating Gyrotonics in their practices. Gyrotonics is great for golfers--Mary is also a trainer at a golf club.

She has been a certified Emergency Medical Technician for over 20 years. She just recently became a certified Animal Control Officer. Following her retirement from the Stone Harbor Police Department in May of 2009 Judy became the manager of Cape May County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center.

Carol Matthews

Having been certified in the fitness industry since 1986 (and certainly 'certifiable' since birth!), Carol Matthews has taught in over 10 different gyms and facilities throughout Cape May County, as well as making periodic cameo instructor appearances at the YMCA of Stuart, Florida. Though accomplished in many formats, from the "feel the burn" days of high impact, through the tailspins of gliding and kickboxing, and into the current aerobic dance fever, Carol's first love and forte has always been and still is choreographed STEP - her license plate "Steppin", a testimony to that passion. Retired from 33 years of teaching 7th and 8th grade English, she has found a new passion for acting and a permanent position with Cape Island Theatre which performs in a variety of venues throughout the Cape May area. She believes the fitness community has afforded her many "healthy happy hours" and has been a source of great friendships and wondrous opportunities, the most important of which was her recent adoption of three beautiful children, made possible by 'number one boss-lady', Nancy Craft. A 'Shout-Out' to all the Step Groupies, past and present: Thank you for your many years of support. Keep the faith! STEP IS NOT DEAD - at least, not in Avalon!
